Contemporary Landscape Design, Creating Dialogue Between Nature and Architecture in Jakarta
Alam Sutera Gallery
Located in the urban district of Alam Sutera, Jakarta, this contemporary art gallery designed by Broadway Malyan sits within a dense and dynamic environment. The landscape project, developed by our studio, aims to reconnect the urban space with a sensory experience of nature, bringing calm, light, and vegetation back into the heart of the city.
Through the subtle integration of natural elements, water, light, and greenery the site becomes a space for pause and contemplation, offering a moment of stillness in contrast to the city’s fast-paced rhythm.
A Sensory and Engaged Landscape Approach
Far from being a mere plant composition, the landscape design is rooted in a deeper reflection on the relationship between people and nature. The project seeks to create moments of stillness, observation, and reconnection. Visitors are invited to slow down, to perceive the quality of filtered natural light, to observe the reflections on the water surfaces, and to feel the quiet presence of the surrounding vegetation.
Here, the landscape becomes an active element of the cultural experience, complementing the gallery’s function while enhancing the quality of time spent on site.
Light, Shadow, and Reflection
Natural Rhythms and Luminous Movements
Natural light was conceived as a material in its own right. Its interplay with water, foliage, and shadows produces a meditative, ever-changing atmosphere that shifts with the time of day and the passing seasons.
Water as a Narrative Element
The reflecting pools are not merely decorative, they mirror the architecture and the sky, amplify light, and add a sensory depth to the space. Their stillness introduces a slower rhythm, encouraging contemplation.
A Green Refuge in the Heart of Jakarta
Amid the dense urban fabric, the garden of Alam Sutera Gallery acts as a natural and poetic counterpoint. It offers visitors an immersive landscape experience without leaving the city. This constant dialogue between stone and vegetation, movement and calm, reveals a new way of inhabiting a cultural space not only as a place to visit, but as a place to recharge.
This project illustrates the essential role of landscape design in redefining urban cultural environments. By integrating nature as a fundamental part of spatial experience, the Alam Sutera Gallery becomes a model of sensitive, contemporary, and deeply human landscape architecture.
A place that celebrates silence, light, and living matter, in the very heart of Jakarta.
