Contemporary Renovation and Extension of a Traditional Penn-ti House in Plouhinec, Brittany

Glazen House

Nestled in Plouhinec, Morbihan, near Lorient, La Maison du Glazen embodies a commitment to preserving and celebrating Brittany’s architectural heritage. Built in the 19th century and already marked on the Napoleonic maps of 1837, the house reflects the simplicity and authenticity of traditional rural architecture a single hearth, a modest ground floor, an attic, and gable-end openings typical of the region.

Through this project, Atelier Glaz blends architecture and interior design to reinterpret the dwelling for modern use, while honoring the quiet, rural character that defines its origin.

Objectives of the Renovation and Extension

The project was guided by a desire to:

  • Restore the existing house while preserving its traditional character

  • Create a comfortable, functional living environment

  • Design a discreet contemporary extension that harmonizes with the historic structure

  • Celebrate Breton rural heritage through a modern architectural interpretation. Led by Atelier Glaz, the project brings together architecture and interior design to adapt this historic dwelling to contemporary lifestyles while maintaining its quiet, authentic identity.

Architectural Approach and Site Integration

An Extension Inspired by Granite Forms

The new volume echoes the rectangular massing of the original building, yet introduces a subtle twist in the façade, creating a faceted, dynamic geometry. This gesture draws inspiration from the granite blocks found throughout the local landscape, a contemporary reinterpretation of vernacular architecture rooted in its context.

A Discreet Insertion in the Landscape

Positioned on the north side, the extension connects naturally to the terrain while remaining invisible from the south, where the public road passes. This careful placement preserves the traditional and understated appearance of the house as seen from the street.

Respecting the Proportions of the Penn-ti

The extension mirrors the proportions of the original Penn-ti, offset slightly to enrich the architectural composition without overpowering it. The dialogue between heritage and modernity is expressed here with subtlety and balance.

Expertise and Collaboration

The Maison du Glazen project mobilized the complementary skills of architecture and interior design, developed by Atelier Glaz:

  • Historical study of the existing building

  • Contemporary architectural design

  • Landscape and heritage integration

  • Material and volume composition

  • Interior layout adapted to modern living

A Contemporary Reading of Breton Heritage

Maison du Glazen represents a refined encounter between past and present. Through a simple yet bold architectural gesture, the project honors Brittany’s rural identity while embracing the spatial and environmental expectations of the 21st century. It stands as a testament to a thoughtful, living heritage, one that evolves with time while preserving its roots.
