Architecture in Harmony with Nature – Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Villa Hutan

Set atop a lush hillside in Bali, Villa Hutan is a private residence designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Open and site-sensitive in its conception, the villa offers a sanctuary for rest and renewal, complemented by a dedicated yoga retreat space. The entire project is guided by a holistic vision one where architecture and landscape unite in a sustainable dialogue with nature.

A Residence Immersed in Nature

Nestled within a tropical valley overlooking a river, Villa Hutan is designed to embrace its environment rather than transform it. Every building placement was carefully considered to minimize site impact and preserve existing vegetation. Not a single tree was displaced, and the natural topography was fully respected. The property also includes a Yoga Shala and meditation spaces discreetly woven into the landscape spaces that encourage stillness, mindfulness, and a deep connection to the surrounding forest.

Sustainable by Design Architecture That Honors Place

Facing east, the villa welcomes the first light of day while remaining naturally ventilated and energy-efficient. The structure’s openness encourages airflow and connection to the landscape. Local, sustainable materials reclaimed wood, bamboo, and volcanic stone were chosen for their natural beauty and durability. A lightweight steel frame allows for generous living volumes and continuous ventilation, resulting in a structure that breathes with the environment rather than against it.

Authentic and Eco-Responsible Materials

Reclaimed ironwood, Sukabumi stone, and volcanic rock lend the villa its tactile identity materials that not only age beautifully but also reduce the project’s ecological footprint. Each texture and tone is in quiet harmony with the Balinese landscape.

Bioclimatic Design and Cross Ventilation

The architectural design encourages constant natural ventilation. Open façades, generous ceiling heights, and strategic spatial layouts ensure thermal comfort without relying heavily on air conditioning a passive and environmentally conscious approach to tropical living.

A Pool Suspended Above the Jungle

At the heart of the project, an infinity pool stretches along the cliff’s edge, overlooking the dense jungle canopy and the river below. Its minimalist design and natural materials transform it into an organic extension of the landscape. Reflections of light, sky, and foliage merge seamlessly, creating the impression of a suspended oasis hovering over the treetops.

Landscape Design by Atelier Glaz – A Sensitive, Contextual Approach

Atelier Glaz served as landscape architect for the project, aiming to protect the site’s ecosystem while enhancing its natural potential. The landscape design follows a minimalist philosophy intervening only where necessary, to guide visitors through the garden while maintaining a sense of wilderness and authenticity.

Respect for Topography and Existing Vegetation

No major earthworks were required: paths and platforms were integrated along the site’s natural contours. The positioning of buildings and circulation routes follows the terrain’s slope, allowing for a subtle and harmonious insertion into the landscape.

A Local and Resilient Plant Palette

The planting design favors endemic species adapted to Bali’s tropical climate, reinforcing the garden’s wild character while reducing maintenance needs. Complementary species were added to encourage biodiversity, shade, and a natural sense of continuity with the surrounding forest.

Villa Hutan represents a successful fusion of contemporary architecture, sustainability, and respect for the landscape. It stands as a testament to our commitment to creating living spaces that honor nature offering modern comfort while nurturing an intimate, sensory connection with the environment.
